Ukraine
An independent state with a rich cultural heritage and proud history, Ukraine is situated in central Europe, bordered by Russia to the northeast, Buelorus to the north, and Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Moldavia to the west. Ukraine's southernmost borders are the waterways of the Black Sea and the Sea of Asov. Ukraine's capital is Kyiv. The country's population is about 50 million.
Ukraine's climate is moderate and continental with mild and snowy winters and dry and warm summers. In Crimea, Ukraine's southernmost region, the climate is subtropical and Mediterranean, making it a popular holiday resort destination. Ukraine is famous for its mineral rich waters used for medicinal purposes at a variety of health resorts throughout the country. Some of better known resorts include Truskavets, Myrhorod, Morshyn, Poliana, and Syniak.
The territory of Ukraine is mainly comprised of flatlands with the exception of the Carpathian Mountains to the west, (Hoverla, the highest peak, is 2081m above sea level) and the Crimean Mountains to the south (Mount Roman Kosh is 1545m above sea level).
The largest rivers of Ukraine are the Dnipro, Dnister, and Pivdennyj Bug. Ukraine has five natural parks and 15 wildlife preserves.
Kyiv, the country's largest city, boasts a population of 2.6 million people. The next largest cities are the industrial centers of Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhia, and Odessa.
National currency is hryvna (UAH) (1 USD ~ 5,35 UAH)
Donetsk
Founded in 1869, Donetsk has grown from a small settlement (Yuzovka) near the metallurgical works built by Welshman John Hughes to a quickly developing industrial, cultural, and scientific center. The surrounding lands of Donbass are rich in coal, which is why Donetsk is known as the "industrial capital" of Ukraine, with coal and metallurgical industries at its foundation.
The cultural life of the city is represented by the Opera and Ballet House and Drama Theatre, the Philharmonic Society, and many museums - the Museum of Local Lore and the Art Museum among them. There is also a circus, a planetarium, several cinema theatres and palaces of culture. Donetsk is proud of its yearly festival, "Stars of the World Ballet," inviting the best representatives in the world of the ballet arts.
As to the sporting life of Donetsk, it could be said that the city's favorite sport is football, represented by the teams of "Shakhtior" (last year's Ukraine champion) and "Metallurg". Born in Donetsk were such world-famous people as S. Bubka, a world record holder in pole-vault, and L. Podkopayeva, a European champion in athletic gymnastics.
In addition to the city's developed industry, Donetsk features numerous notable architectural sites, as well as sight-seeing attractions. Among them are city center with the square named by Lenin and the Artyom street. Recreation sites include two parks, the Kal'mius river embankment, and botanical gardens.
In Donetsk, education and science are represented by a network of universities and centers for science. The best known are Donetsk National University, Donetsk National Technical University, Donetsk National Medical University, and a complex of institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
Sv'yatogorsk
Sv'yatogorsk is a beautiful recreation area featuring mountains, a river, Cretaceous rock grottoes, coniferous forests, and an orthodox church monastery. Nearby, the meandering Seversky Donets River, which was navigable in the 17th century, is 100 meters wide and four meters deep - up to six meters in some locations. Lush 200 meter-high Cretaceous mountains rise from the river banks, composed of sedimentary rocks from a Cretaceous sea formed about 100 - million years ago. The monastery's most ancient relic is a Cretaceous rock cave with tangled labyrinthine passages, underground churches and cells. At the top of the mountain is the 17th-century Nickolayevskaya church, a mysterious and legendary structure. At the foot of mountains, on the bank of Seversky Donets River, are cathedrals, churches, and chapels, as well as the 19th-century Gostiny Dvor that complement the landscape of Sv'atyje Gory and immense tracks of forest. There is also a monument to the revolutionary Artyom. This 22-meter high Cretaceous sculpture rises above the environs and is a legacy of the Soviet Union epoch. Sviatohorsk is one of the best climatic resorts of Ukraine.
